Copper Wire
Insulated copper, bare copper and grounding conductors in all common sizes.
From Loop high-rises to the industrial corridors on the South and West sides, Chicago buildings are constantly re-wired, re-tenanted and re-powered. We buy the surplus cable that comes out of that work.
Chicago is a city of renovation. A tenant build-out on Wacker, a riser replacement in a 100-year-old warehouse converted to offices, a restaurant build in Fulton Market, a plant upgrade on the far South Side — each one ends with reels that were opened and not finished. Loop and River North work tends to produce smaller THHN and MC quantities because the runs are short; the industrial corridors and the larger suburban plants produce the heavier feeders, tray cable and service cable.
We buy surplus wire from electrical contractors, distributors and building owners in Chicago, including material stored in basement vaults, loading docks and suburban shops that serve city jobs. If the reels are in a high-rise and the freight elevator needs scheduling, say so up front — it changes how pickup is planned.
A 4/0 reel does not fit in a passenger elevator, and a 48-inch reel will not turn a corner in a service corridor. Most Chicago pickups are planned around a dock, a freight elevator, and a loading window that the building engineer controls. Alley access, permitted parking and rush-hour restrictions all affect when a truck can be at the door.
Send the reel diameters and approximate weights with the request. If the material is on an upper floor, tell us how it got there and whether the same route works in reverse.
The businesses below are the usual sources of surplus cable here. We do not claim that any named facility has material available — this is who tends to hold it.
Chicago pickups are usually scheduled at a dock with a freight elevator or a grade-level door. We can work with a scheduled window, a certificate of insurance for the building, and the loading rules your property manager sets. For smaller loads, a liftgate truck is often simpler than a full trailer.
If the material is outside the city, tell us the suburb — we cover the collar counties on the same route and can often combine stops.
Dock height, forklift capacity, reel weights, gate hours and any site restrictions. It is the difference between a pickup that works and one that turns around at the gate.
Local FAQ
Yes, with planning. Freight elevator availability, dock hours and building insurance requirements all need to be arranged in advance. Send reel sizes and weights so the right truck and crew are booked.
Often. If you have partial reels at a shop and a load at a job site, list both locations in the request and we will work out the most efficient route.
